Gary Brickell or the “Brick” as he is more commonly known, won this prestigious and well deserved award for his continuous efforts in every form that involves his love for the sport. Gary was described as the volunteer who does everything especially when it comes to anything at Wollongong Touch Association. From administering our local competition, to putting the hats outs, cleaning up the garbage, and refereeing are all things Gary does just to ensure the local competition runs smoothly. On top of his local affiliate duties, he actively participates as one of the most important volunteer bases and that is as a referee at numerous Touch Football events around the country. This year he celebrated 25 years of continuous services as a graded referee of the NSWTA, so he has been volunteering for the 25years an effort that has been recognized with this award.
Amy Regal, on the night was named Junior Female Player of the Year she was described as a pivotal player in any team she is representing. Amy has the ability not only to open the line with a slicing run from half but can beat you to the outside with a long ball many male counter parts would cherish.
On another note Wollongong Touch Association’s Open Men’s and Women’s teams have kicked off their Vawdon Cup campaigns to a good start. The Men’s team got on top of Canterbury Bulldogs 7 -5 for a win for their first game of their season. The Women’s team on the other hand is looking to improve on their 4th position finish from last year and is off to a good start with a loss and a win under their belts. Their win against Sydney’s East Roosters was the first time they have had a win over a top team since they made the step up to the opens division last year. The young Wollongong team maintained composure to win the game 4-2 over a much older experienced team. Both teams are looking to further imprint their status respectively with round three being played on Friday night in Sydney.
